The Right Wing Money

So without further ado, let’s get started!

Right-Wing Sugar Daddy #1: Sheldon Adelson

Like most neoconservatives, Adelson’s goal in life is to make sure the United States and Israel remain in a state of perpetual warfare against Arab countries until most of the world is destroyed. Adelson, who made his fortune as a Las Vegas casino mogul, made headlines in 2007 when he funded Freedom’s Watch, a neoconservative advocacy group that supported wars wherever and whenever it could find them.

The group’s first campaign was a $15 million ad blitz urging Americans to support the Iraq troop surge. One of the group’s most notorious ads featured an Iraq war vet who lost both his legs during the war imploring Congress to keep funding the war indefinitely because “if we pull out now everything I’ve given and sacrificed will mean nothing.” The ad also shamelessly conflated the Iraq war with the September 11 terrorist attacks by showing pictures of the World Trade Center burning as the vet firmly reminded Americans that “they attacked us.”

From there, the group held a conference hyping up the dangers of Iran and radical Islam in general. Freedom’s Watch disbanded in late 2008 after a sizable chunk of Adelson’s spare cash went up in smoke — quite possibly the only good outcome from the global financial crisis.

Although Adelson’s impact on U.S. policy is relatively small, he is much more of a factor in Israel where he invested a reported $180 million to launch the free Israel Hayom tabloid in 2007. The Israeli media apparently refer to the paper as “Bibi-ton” because it serves as a propaganda rage for Netanyahu’s hard-line Likud government. The paper, which now has the largest circulation of any daily newspaper in Israel, mercilessly attacked the government of former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, particularly his handling of the 2006 mini-war with Lebanon (sample headline, per the New Yorker: “The Ass-Covering of the Government”). Adelson was also upset that Olmert had the audacity to support a two-state solution where Palestinians are actually given some level of autonomy over their lives.

Right-Wing Sugar Daddy #2: Richard Mellon Scaife

Scaife got his start in politics by giving Richard Nixon’s campaign $1 million in 1972 and he hasn’t looked back since. As an heir to the Mellon fortune, Scaife didn’t exactly have to pick himself up by his bootstraps on his way to the top. And instead of doing something useful with his life, Scaife has blown hundreds of millions of dollars keeping wastoids like Jonah Goldberg employed by funding conservative think tanks such as the Heritage Foundation, newspapers such as the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and right-wing opinion rags such as the American Spectator.

Scaife really hit his stride in the 1990s when he became obsessed with forcing President Bill Clinton and his penis from office. He kicked things off in 1993 by funding the so-called “Arkansas Project” that sent Spectator hacks down to Little Rock to dig up embarrassing dirt on the Clintons. Although that failed to produce the goods, Scaife decided to simultaneously fund Paula Jones’ unsuccessful sexual harassment lawsuit against Clinton, thus setting the stage for later sex scandals that would result in the president getting impeached by the Republican House.

Scaife also got another “gift” when the suicide of Deputy White House Counsel Vince Foster sparked a litany of crazed conspiracies asserting that the Clintons had actually murdered Foster themselves.

“The death of Vincent Foster: I think that’s the Rosetta Stone to the whole Clinton Administration,” Scaife told the New York Times in 1995. “There are just too many questions that have no answers. ”

In order to unlock this “Rosetta Stone,” Scaife funded “journalists” who were willing to keep the Foster-was-murdered conspiracy alive. As New York Times reporter Tim Weiner noted at the time, Scaife’s Tribune-Review was “the only daily newspaper in the nation trying to prove that Mr. Foster might have been murdered.”

To make a long story short, Scaife never truly nailed Clinton like he wanted to, but he did get to watch Clinton get impeached for lying about a blowjob. God, America was a much nicer country back when we had no real problems to deal with.

Right-Wing Sugar Daddies #3 and #4: The Wyly Brothers

Sam and Charles Wyly gained notoriety during the 2000 Republican presidential primary by bankrolling the most comically Orwellian front group ever assembled. Dubbed “Republicans for Clean Air” the group spent more than $2 million for ads that attacked John McCain’s environmental record while praising George W. Bush’s green credentials. The Wylys similarly went to bat for their boy Bush by donating $10,000 a piece to the infamously dishonest Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign that attacked John Kerry’s war record in Vietnam. The Wylys also donated more than $1 million to the Republican National Committee from 2000 through 2004, although they significantly curbed those donations once the Securities and Exchange Commission started investigating them for tax fraud.

Other than funding conservative campaigns, the Wylys’ favorite hobby seems to be getting in trouble for alleged tax evasion. The Wylys, who started making money in the software business and then branched out to clothing stores, restaurants and energy companies, first got the attention of the SEC in 2004 when they refused to provide Bank of America with details on their offshore assets. Oops!

From there, it was one unfortunate event after another for the Wylys. In 2005 the brothers copped to “inadvertently” hiding company profits in offshore trusts. In 2006, the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations issued a report detailing a series of trusts the Wylys set up on the Isle of Man that were used to shelter $720 million worth of profits from taxation. And this past summer the SEC finally brought the hammer down on the Wylys, accusing them of reaping more than $30 million from an insider trading scheme related to the sale of their Sterling Software company. The SEC is seeking millions of dollars in fines from the brothers, which would presumably leave them with less cash to use on political smear campaigns. And what a sad, sad tragedy that would be.

Right-Wing Sugar Daddy #5: Peter Thiel

This super-wealthy technodork, who made his money cofounding the PayPal online payment service and being one of Facebook’s earliest investors, is using his cash to influence hearts and minds, albeit in a significantly different way from the previous right-wing sugar daddies we’ve examined. For instead of funding right-wing political campaigns, advertising blitzes and think tanks, Thiel is instead trying to influence his fellow libertarians to flee society, not change it.

Thiel officially lost faith in American society after the 2008 presidential election and he confessed on the Cato Institute’s Web site that he thought democracy and freedom were no longer compatible. The big reason for this, Thiel said, was that over the past century too many people went on welfare and women got the right to vote. Since welfare recipients and women are “two constituencies that are notoriously tough for libertarians,” Thiel reasoned, then “the notion of ‘capitalist democracy’” has become “an oxymoron. ”

To rectify this, Thiel sunk more than $500,000 into the hilariously bone-headed “Seasteading” project being headed up by Patri Friedman, the grandson of famous conservative economist Milton Friedman. With money from Thiel and other like-minded rich libertarians, the seasteading project aims to build large, floating, concrete platforms in international waters where libertarians can live without the greedy hands of Uncle Sam taking their hard-earned cash.

They also plan to make money for themselves by using these platforms as intranational havens for drugs and prostitution, since no legal authority would be able to arrest them out in the open waters. And presumably, women living on the platforms won’t have any say in how the seasteads are run, lest they transform these aquatic libertarian paradises into scummy socialist hellholes. Thiel is also interested in funding transhumanist life-extension projects, as he has given the Methuselah Foundation excess of $3.5 million to ensure that he and his buddies can haunt the Earth with their presence for at least the next few hundred years.

When you think about it, Thiel’s devotion to dopey libertarian escapism, while elitist and horribly sexist, actually makes him the most palatable of all the right-wing sugar daddies we’ve examined. Unlike Scaife, Adelson and the Wylys, Thiel doesn’t want to influence how we think about the world. Rather, he wants to flee the wretched mediocrity of his fellow fleshbags and escape to a no-girls-allowed cyber-treehouse out in the middle of the ocean. To which I say, “You go, Galt!” The only tragedy is that if Thiel succeeds he likely won’t bring any of his brethren with him to the seastead platforms. Because what America needs now more than ever is for a bunch of its self-appointed Atlases to go shrug themselves.

Doctors for America!

Some Doctors like this health care thing!

Dear Representatives John Boehner and Eric Cantor:

We are physicians and medical students who serve patients across America in all 50 states.

Every day, we see a broken health care system that is failing patients and health care providers.

That is why we stand behind the Affordable Care Act as an important first step in fixing our health care system.

We know that you have proposed to weaken or repeal the Affordable Care Act as one of your top priorities in the new Congress.

We believe repealing or weakening the Affordable Care Act will move our health care system backward – and we strongly urge against it. Instead, we ask you to work with us in building upon the Affordable Care Act, making it stronger, and ensuring that we can crate a health care system that works for all Americans.

The Affordable Care Act will cover 32 million more Americans that otherwise would fallen through the cracks of our health care system. It takes the biggest steps in history to improve the quality and reduce the cost of health care. It protects our children, our seniors and our sickest patients from the past abuses of the insurance industry. These are just a few of the reasons why so many doctors and patients support the Affordable Care Act.

The Price of War

Article by Editor-In-Chief Katrina vanden Heuvel…

‘…Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and Harvard professor
Linda Bilmes now estimate the costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars
will reach $4 to $6 trillion. There have been approximately 2,200 US and coalition casualties in Afghanistan, and tens of thousands of Afghan civilian deaths. The Christian Science Monitor reports
that “softening” the 2011 and 2014 deadlines “could add at least $125
billion in war spending—not including long-term costs like debt
servicing and health care for veterans.”

‘One idea which might make the war resonate more with voters is to take responsibility for healthcare for veterans through a Veterans Trust Fund. Proposed
by House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner, it would
require Congress to appropriate funds upfront whenever they vote to go
to war so that when soldiers are injured or wounded they are able to
receive the care they need when they return home. Currently, that
funding isn’t necessary when we send our troops off to war, so proper
care is far from guaranteed.

‘Consider that last year there were more than 1,800 suicide attempts
by veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Yet the Veterans
Administration is short more than 1,000 counselors, therapists and
mental health specialists. Also, 565,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans
have filed disability claims for combat-related injuries. But the
backlog for processing claims at the Veterans Administration now exceeds
500,000…’

Dear Republicans;

The hypocrisy must stop!

Just one thing to the Republican Party: If your party truly believes President Obama’s Affordable Care Act is detrimental to America, do the right thing and don’t accept it. At the very least your party will have saved America 2.5 million dollars a year on what it cost to cover the elected members in your party. Please put your money where your mouth and belief system is, just say no to the program when they offer it to you. Do the right thing!

Glen Beck Attacks

Glenn Beck’s sermons of hatred against progressive leaders and organizations have had dangerous, almost deadly consequences.

As journalist John Hamilton wrote in a Media Matters article, “On July 18 this year, Byron Williams opened fire on California Highway Patrol officers who had stopped him on an Oakland freeway for driving erratically. For 12 frantic minutes, Williams traded shots with the police, employing three firearms and a small arsenal of ammunition, including armor-piercing rounds fired from a .308-caliber rifle. … In an affidavit, an Oakland police investigator reported that during an interview at the hospital, Williams “stated that his intention was to start a revolution by traveling to San Francisco and killing people of importance at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU.”

Hamilton wrote that observers were “mystified by one of Byron Williams’ reported targets: the Tides Foundation, a low-profile charitable organization known for funding environmentalists, community groups, and other organizations.” It turned out Beck had attacked Tides 29 times on his show, including warning the Foundation, “I’m coming for you,” before Williams went on his shooting spree, and Williams admitted Beck was his inspiration.

Beck has resorted to brazenly lying and rewriting history to engage in torrents of red-faced paranoid rants about the threats posed by individuals and groups dedicated to social justice — and make no mistake, they could have grave consequences. Here are six of his worst attacks:

1. George Soros

This November, Beck devoted hours of his show to launching a venomous attack on George Soros. Fabricating a story about Soros’ childhood involvement in the seizure of Jewish property under the Nazis, Beck was called out by Gideon Rachman, the Financial Times’ chief foreign affairs commentator and Simon Greer of The Jewish Fund for Justice (who was also assailed by Beck in May with “Nazi” comparisons) for crossing the red-line with blatant antisemitism. Writes Rachman: “He accuses a financier, whom he repeatedly emphasizes is Jewish, of being a ‘puppet-master,’ a man with no national loyalties, who makes vast profits by overthrowing governments and subverting currencies, and who manipulates events from behind the scenes.” Media Matters for America has collected an archive of Beck’s attacks on Soros, now numbering in the dozens.

2. Credo Mobile

This November, Glenn Beck attacked the country’s only progressive phone company, Credo Mobile. Beck went after its activist arm, Credo Action, on his notorious blackboard: “Nearly 350,000 members of Credo asked Discovery Communications to cancel Sarah Palin’s ‘nature’ show,” a Credo Action petition explains, “and on his show Beck challenged the authenticity of our sweeping grassroots activism and our values. Incredibly, Beck waved it off as just another part of some vast socialist conspiracy.”

Here’s part of Beck’s rant:

“There’s another grassroots boycott! Yes, this time of conservative ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska.’ This is a fantastic reality show which looks great … Well, Discovery is being targeted by environmentalists. Now, it’s a grassroots boycott, it must be that regular Americans are outraged at Sarah Palin. Man! Well, the group organizing the boycott is Credo Mobile, and Credo Action, which is a part of the larger organization… These groups focus on “progressive” philanthropy and activism! And they’re also a mobile phone provider, which is great, so your phone calls go to help these … hmmm… It’s the same group of people. So very ‘grassroots’ — there’s your grassroots boycott of ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska’ on Discovery! So organic, so pure.”

Credo hit right back: “Credo is proud to fund other progressive organizations that do valiant work to protect our environment, fight Fox, and stop the hate, lies and fear promoted by Beck and others in the right-wing media every day. That’s why we’re giving $.25 for every signature to the other organizations Beck called out as being funded by Credo: Media Matters, Center for Constitutional Rights, the Ruckus Society, Color Of Change and the Ella Baker Center (See below for more on these groups’ campaigns against Beck).”

3. Richard Trumka

Beck has recently waged a series of airwave attacks on Trumka, head of the AFL-CIO. Media Matters recounts Beck’s latest attack, based on the flimsiest of evidence. On November 15, “on his Fox News show, Glenn Beck launched an attack on the AFL-CIO and its president, Richard Trumka, claiming that the ‘Communist Party USA is admitting to the party’s working relationship with Richard Trumka … and the AFL-CIO.’ Beck reprised his attack this morning on ‘Fox & Friends,’ during a rant about Democrats being ‘controlled by radicals and revolutionaries’ as well as ‘communists.’ The blog posting’s source was an amateur podcast with no direct quotation. Trumka responded that ‘Beck is so out of it.’”

4. Tides Foundation

Before Byron Willams tried to launch his deadly attacks, Beck had referred to Tides as “bullies” and “thugs” whose mission is to “warp your children’s brains and make sure they know how evil capitalism is.” He showed an appalling lack of remorse after the Williams incident. Glenn Beck taunted, “Uh-oh. Did you guys think I wouldn’t talk about it anymore? Uh-oh. Look who’s wrong.”

As Media Matters reported, Beck “repeatedly attacked Tides, its CEO, and founder Drummond Pike, and the ‘dirtbag[s]‘ connected to Tides. Tides, Beck said, is responsible for ‘anti-capitalist propaganda movies’ to ‘indoctrinate people in their schools’ and in their churches. Glenn Beck’s raging has offered ample ammunition for advertiser boycotts that Tides has successfully pushed, along with other progressive groups. Tides CEO Drummond Pike called on advertisers to stop supporting Fox News, noting that “businesses that pay to broadcast commercials on Fox News are subsidizing Glenn Beck’s television show by continuing to pump money into the network,” adding, “It has become clear that the only way to stop supporting Beck is to stop supporting Fox News.” Media Matters and People for the American Way joined in calling on major advertisers to stop supporting the network.

5. Frances Fox Piven

Glenn Beck has been a leader in a paranoid right-wing crusade against a visionary writer and sociologist in her late 70s, Frances Fox Piven. Beck believes that a Nation article by Piven and her late husband Richard Cloward in1966 on ending poverty is the left-wing blueprint for takeover and attacked her repeatedly on his show. Beck summed up his mad theory:

“Cloward-Piven starts with the idea that there is a wide gap between the entitlements that poor people are eligible for and the entitlements that they are actually collecting. They say getting everybody on to the welfare rolls will wipe out poverty and the only way to accomplish that is through a massive multi-city education campaign making heavy use of the media. So, once the poor know that they’re eligible and start to sign up, what happens next? In their own words, “a crisis.” A crisis that starts in the cities that would rapidly spread to a nationwide level and force the government to move quickly to create a new program for direct income distribution: Marxism. Wait a minute — community organizations overwhelming the system that would lead to a massive redistribution of wealth? Gee, where have I heard that before? That’s Cloward-Piven strategy in a nutshell.”

Attacks on Piven were echoed by other right-wing media outlets, including Andrew Breitbart. Writes Piven in response to the attack campaign, “[T]he impulse to dismiss lunatic charges by the Right in the hopes they will go away is a mistake. They aren’t going away because the attacks are effective. What we should do instead of ducking is rally to the defense of the individuals and groups that are under assault, and we should do that aggressively, proudly, even joyfully because we are standing with what is best in American politics, and especially with the social movements from below that have sometimes humanized our society. That is what drives the Right crazy, and it is also what should make us proud.”

6. Van Jones

Only a few months after being named Obama’s Special Adviser for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, also known as the Green Jobs Czar, Glenn Beck started airing attack segments on his show — a total of 14. In July 2009 Color of Change, which Jones co-founded in 2005 and left in 2007, “launched a campaign urging advertisers on Beck’s Fox News show to pull their ads, in response to comments by Beck stating President Obama has a ‘deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture,’” as Wikipedia summarizes. The campaign was a huge success — over 100 sponsors dropped out of Beck’s show. And a September 29 New York Times Magazine profile of Beck reported that “as of Sept. 21, 296 advertisers have asked that their commercials not be shown on Beck’s show.”

As the paranoid attacks from Beck and the right-wing media organizations and accusations continued, Jones resigned from the White House to keep the distraction away from the White House. After waiting for the storms of controversy to settle down, Van Jones used his speech at the NAACP Image Awards to reach out to Fox News host Glenn Beck: “I see you, and I love you, brother. I love you, and you cannot do anything about it.”

The Price of Decisions

Dear Attorney General Holder:

The American Civil Liberties Union respectfully urges you to refer to Assistant U.S. Attorney John Durham the question of whether former president George W. Bush’s conduct related to the interrogation of detainees by the United States violated the anti-torture statute. See 18 U.S.C. § 2340A.
In his recently published memoirs, President Bush discusses his authorization of the waterboarding of Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah. He states, for example, that he “approved the use of the [enhanced] interrogation techniques,” including waterboarding, on Abu Zubaydah, and that he responded to a request to waterboard Khalid Sheik Mohammed by stating: “Damn right.” George W. Bush, Decision Points 169-70 (2010).

The Department of Justice has made clear that waterboarding is torture and, as such, a crime under the federal anti-torture statute. 18 U.S.C. § 2340A(c). The United States has historically prosecuted waterboarding as a crime. In light of the admission by the former President, and the legally correct determination by the Department of Justice that waterboarding is a crime, you should ensure that Mr. Durham’s current investigation into detainee interrogations encompasses the conduct and decisions of former President Bush.
The ACLU acknowledges the significance of this request, but it bears emphasis that the former President’s acknowledgement that he authorized torture is absolutely without parallel in American history. The admission cannot be ignored. In our system, no one is above the law or beyond its reach, not even a former president. That founding principle of our democracy would mean little if it were ignored with respect to those in whom the public most invests its trust. It would also be profoundly unfair for Mr. Durham to focus his inquiry on low-level officials charged with implementing official policy but to ignore the role of those who authorized or ordered the use of torture.

Failure to fully investigate the role of the former President in the use of torture would also severely compromise our ability to advocate for human rights in other countries. The United States has been a champion of that cause for over half a century. Recently, while in Indonesia, President Obama urged that country to acknowledge the human rights abuses of the Suharto regime. He stated unequivocally that “[w]e can’t go forward without looking backwards.” Without suggesting that our own experience is equivalent, it is clear that the United States’s authority to push for such accountability in other countries, and the willingness of those countries to follow our advice, would quickly unravel if we failed even to investigate abuses authorized by our own officials.

The ACLU understands the gravity of this matter and appreciates the difficulty of the Department of Justice’s task. A nation committed to the rule of law, however, cannot simply ignore evidence that its most senior leaders authorized torture.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. For your convenience, I am attaching the ACLU’s letter of March 17, 2009, in which we asked you to appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate crimes relating to the abuse of detainees.

Sincerely,

Anthony D. Romero
