For the sake of a dollar, the American way.
As does BET, Oprah continues to fail to be a credit to her race or gender.
There was a statement made by the infamous Rush Limbaugh about the National Football League being desirous of black quarterbacks being successful in that position, that it was good for the league for it to happen. He lost his job at ESPN over that remark at the time as it came across as a bad to have blacks allowed to play in that respected position of leadership of taking hard men in to do most physical of battles against men of like minded stature and purpose. In the NFL it has long been standard protocol to speak in favor of the black quarterback even if no one expected much success with them at the helm. That has come to past as blacks have obtained success at both the quarterback and the coaching level in this most manly of American sports. This cannot be said of either Oprah Winfrey or BET as representatives of the best one group of people has to offer over another. Here we have cases in which both entities have existed strictly for the sake of making a dollar, while sometimes extremely profitable, not always the best example of getting there in a positive or enlightened manner as an individual or business entity.
I am going to limit my presentation of this opinion biased as it may seem on the observation of her actions as a woman of influence as a father of a young lady potentially affected by what she sees. First and foremost, the permission to fail, over and over and over and over again with Oprah. Oprah Is big again!, for the umpteen time already, she has to be at least 240 lbs. at the height of 5’4” tall. That is heavy for that height and very unhealthy for her heart; there is no two ways around that fact. The side view is not flattering at all, girlfriend. She has had more careers in health and fitness launched trying to get her to do what she refuses to do for herself in spite of all the admiration of women all over the world and the respect of a few men appreciative of her staying power and bank account, basically maintain just anyone of a combination of those programs she has trained under already and stick with it from now on! But…, and I have a daughter and two granddaughters watching this woman inability to stick with keeping herself fit for any length of time. On top of this most obvious problem of yo-yo dieting right before our very eyes, somehow, each new occasion, each new doctor, each new guru is the one who will lead her to the promise land of fitness forever more until the other issue in her life smacks her upside the head or at the very least, the heart, he inability to maintain relationships. I am watching the reinforcement of public failure for the sake of making a dollar for that has a higher priority in this society.
She is really enforcing the negative messages by choosing to have Mackenzie Phillips and Sara Palin as an hour long guest on her show. We know that least Ms. Phillips was motivated to sell her book about her situation with her father, but I could not for the life of me understand Oprah’s participation by offering her audience as a potential forum of customers. I personally, as a kid abused, did not see the relationship she had with him as a good thing and if shared, should have been shared publically while he was alive. It came across like there was expectation that the public should be more open and accepting of different ways of doing things. As I would imagine many would do, I first think of the messages we tell our kids in a time when it seems there are so many adults believing that having relationships with them in an adult manner is a perfectly normal way to live and that was being implied in her book and so doing in coming on any show to sell it, and this was okay with Oprah. As will be with the upcoming Sara Palin selling her ‘Going Rogue!’ You can’t pretend anything with Ms. Palin as she was all over the campaign trail with the loons and ‘Birthers’ questioning the legitimacy of the Barack Obama Presidency. She has pretty much taken to side with the more hard core right wing perspective of the hard right wing of the Republican Party along with the positions taken by the well known media leaders like Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity. This is quietly considered to be the ‘Klan’ controlled wing of the formerly civilized hard right conservative wing today’s modern Republican Party.
While Oprah may rationalize to herself and others on the virtues of allowing an abused woman to open her soul to the world for other women who may have suffered the same fate by having Ms. Phillips on, there is no way to rationalize someone who believes you to be inferior and therefore, have no right to even live here in this fine wonderful country built by good hard working white folks. This is according to records, is from an educated grown woman of forty-something years having run a town as mayor and state as governor for some time, who seeks to run that country with the rest of us trapping in here also with nowhere to run. Oprah, the credit to her race and her gender, sees this as a positive message to share with the women of America who watched and still watch her failure everyday with unexplained respect and awe, once again will see her as the pioneer for having done so. We all know she’s just all up in there when it comes to the money from the ratings. As a father, I don’t know where to begin to start on the detrimental impact of BET on woman all across America.
